How would you feel about pet shop owners switching from mill/BYB pups to rescue/shelter pups only? See link…?

I think this is a really cool story and a step in the right direction. What say you?

  1. I think it’s teriffic! I mean, those pups need a home. They were probably kicked out and abused by their old owners. It’s actually better to adopted animals though. That’s my opinion.

  2. wow i think that is awesome hopefully a lot of other shops will follow the lead.

  3. There’s a pet store in my town that only deals with rescue animals. They have pups and cats there from the local shelters. I think its a step in the right direction. It also provides another place for animals to go when their time at the shelter runs out.

Now the other one…sadly still deals with puppy mills and back yard breeders( more bybers then anything else).

  4. great idea. I have heard of this before and hope other stores will follow suit

  5. That sounds great. The only thing I’d worry about is if the store does not screen the buyers properly and the dogs go to bad homes. Other than that, I think everyone should follow.

  6. the pups’ tell you what love they can bring to your lives. i myself have been shelterig suh abandoned ones. none of them have eve turned me down. my neighbours are also happy with them. there are a lot who cares for the pure beed ones. what will happen to those who are forsaken for no fault of their own? why do we adopt orphaan children irrespective of their creed or decet?

  7. Decent pet stores have done just this – the Petco in our county has rescues and shelters come in with their adoptable dogs and lets them have expos there.

The pet store wins anyway – all those adopted dogs and cats need food, toys, beds, etc. and people are very likely to buy them from the pet store that sponsored the adoption viewing.

Any pet store still selling puppies or kittens needs to be boycotted and some large rescue organizations (Humane Society for one) have campaigns going to pressure these pet shops to stop selling them.

  8. I like it, besides one thing.

Pet Stores often keep their puppies in terrible conditions, so it would be better if they just stopped all together.

but this is DEFINITELY a step in the right direction.

  9. That IS a step in the right direction but I think the pet shop workers should have some additional training on how to vet potential owners and care for such young animals.

Most of them couldn’t give a tinker’s toss about the animals and have NO idea whatsoever how to care for them or how to make sure that their “forever” home is one that is loving and safe.

To my knowldege, I have only stepped inside a pet shop that sold puppies just once. The two puppies were in this small cage and all they had in there with them was a moudly bit of what looked like a bathrug to lie on and a chewed-up slipper to play with. They were right in the shop window for everyone to gawp at which must have been overwhelming for them. I ask the person working there about them and she just seem to consider them a waste of space. I would never ever work in a pet shop that sold puppies but to put myself in her situation for a second – if I were her and if rules allowed it (and believe me I’d try and bend every one), I’d have those puppies with me so I could interact and play with them when the shop floor was quiet. I hate the fact they were just shoved in a window in the direct sunlight with everyone free to just come and gawp at them.

  10. Certainly better that obtaining from a BYB. However, there may not be stringent rules about adopting and they may not be able to do home visits, and check references like a regular rescue league does. I have said this for years, and it has been done in many areas of the country. Adoption days at Pet Stores, rescued cats in Pet Stores,…. better that being put down.. Let’s take care of the millions of homeless first, then we can Proceed to truly supply, based upon real demand. Great video. I have always said that prior to adopting any animal. there should be mandatory classes in Animal s 101, followed by a test, home visits, ref. checks, etc……That would cut down on so many returned animals, and neglected and abused pets left to suffer.

  11. This is terrific and definitely a step in the right direction!
I hope all pet stores do this…

  12. Petco offers local shelters and rescue animals all of the kennel space daily to second hand animals. It is twice the exposure and a great service to any community.

  13. OH PLEASE LET THIS CATCH ON!!!
This story should be plastered in newspapers and magazines everywhere. How wonderful! A step toward eliminating puppy mills and BYB as well as helping animals in need. Now let’s see some Pits in there!
