Supposedly in 1876, a visiting seaman gave a seedling of this tree to a girl in Santa Barbara. A year later, he friend replanted it in it's current location - the corner of Chapala and Montecito.
It is now one of the largest of its species (Ficus macrophyllia) in the United States. It is a historic landmark and is on the California Register of Big Trees. It averages 80' in height, 176' in average crown spread and over 40' in diameter.
It is an awesom sight!

Santa Barbara is a city in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. Situated on an east-west trending section of coastline, the longest such section on the west coast, between the steeply-rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the sea, and having a Mediterranean climate, it is called California's "South Coast", and is also sometimes referred to casually as the "American Riviera." As of the census of 2000, the city had a population of 92,325 while the contiguous urban area, which includes the cities of Goleta and Carpinteria, along with the unincorporated regions of Isla Vista, Montecito, Mission Canyon, Hope Ranch, Summerland, and others, had an approximate population of 200,000.

In addition to being a popular tourist and resort destination, the city has a robust economy which includes a large service sector, education, technology, health care, finance, agriculture, manufacturing, and local government. In 2004, the service sector accounted for fully 35% of local employment. Education in particular is well-represented, with five institutions of higher learning on the south coast (the University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, Antioch University, and the Brooks Institute of Photography.) The Santa Barbara Airport services the city, as does Amtrak. U.S. Highway 101 connects the Santa Barbara area with Los Angeles to the south and San Francisco to the north. Behind the city, in and beyond the Santa Ynez Mountains, is the Los Padres National Forest, which contains several remote wilderness areas.

Santa Barbara is located about 90 miles (140 km) WNW of Los Angeles, along the Pacific coast. This stretch of coast along southern Santa Barbara County is often referred to as the "American Riviera" because its geography and Mediterranean climate are reminiscent of the French and Italian Riviera coastline along the Mediterranean. The Santa Ynez Mountains, an east-west trending range, rise dramatically behind the city, with several peaks exceeding 4,000 feet (1,200 m). Covered with chaparral and with sandstone outcrops, they make a famously scenic backdrop to the town. Sometimes, perhaps once every three years, snow falls on the mountains, but it rarely stays for more than a few days. Nearer to town, and directly east and adjacent to Mission Santa Barbara, is a hill known locally as the "Riviera," traversed by "Alameda Padre Serra" (shortened APS), "Father Serra's pathway." The hillside, made accessible by the advent of the automobile early in the 20th century, is now built with relatively expensive homes. A spectacularly beautiful area looking south toward the Pacific and the Channel Islands and having sunrise to sunset views, Santa Barbara became the winter destination for the titans of post-Civil War America. Private railroad cars clustered on the sidings at Santa Barbara. The Potter Hotel overlooking Santa Barbara's West Beach was a world renowned resort. Owners of industry visited Santa Barbara and chose Santa Barbara hillside locations for their grand estates. Others preferred the beach and built palatially there, from Sandyland Cove, Padaro Lane, the city beaches, and west to what is now Goleta.

The architectural image of Santa Barbara is the Spanish Colonial Revival style of architecture adopted by city leaders after the 1925 earthquake destroyed much of the downtown commercial district. The residential architecture of Santa Barbara is predominantly California bungalows built in the early decades of the 20th century, with many Victorian homes adorning the "Upper East" and Spanish style homes designed by well known California architects in Santa Barbara and on estates in Montecito and Hope Ranch. The city has passed ordinances against billboards and regulates outdoor advertising, so the city is relatively free of advertising clutter.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 41.4 square miles (107.3 km²), of which, 19.0 square miles (49.2 km²) of it is land and 22.4 square miles (58.1 km²) of it (54.17%) is water. The high official figures for water is due to the city limit extending into the ocean, including a strip of city reaching out into the sea and inland again to keep the Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) within the city boundary.

Who Says the Real Estate Market in California is Cooling? In Santa Barbara, the Luxury Real Estate Market is Red Hot

Santa Barbara, CA (PRWEB) October 22, 2006

In the last couple weeks the Santa Barbara luxury real estate market has been especially active, closing 3 sales above the $ 10 million each. This in the wake of the negative press about the real estate industry.

All three sales are located in Montecito, one of the crown jewel locations of Santa Barbara. One of the three sales, a beautiful historic 1926 estate sold for $ 15,750,000. to one of hollywood’s elite after being on the market for 889 days. The other two sales were quietly available for sale, and sold before coming onto the market. One of the sales sold at $ 11,100,000 the other sold at $ 14,000,000.

Adding these three sales to the 2006 tally of $ 10+ million dollar sales puts 2006 at $ 203,850,000. through mid October, nearly double the full year 2005. You can also see from the data below that 2000 was the first year in the Santa Barbara Multiple Listing Service to see a sale at $ 16 million, and the revenue for this real estate segment has increased quite impressively every year since.

$ 10+ million Estate Market Revenue

Jan - Oct 2006    $ 203.850 million

2005    $ 128.8 million

2004    $ 74.7 million

2003    $ 64.5 million

2002    $ 50.3 million

2001    $ 33.5 million

2000    $ 16 million

Source: Santa Barbarba Multiple Listing Service

So why is the $ 10+ million Estate property market in Santa Barbara booming? Well there are several reasons, one of which is Santa Barbara has seen very little new inventory from which affluent buyers might select from. This limited amount of existing Estate inventory, coupled with a limited supply of Estate land options and the difficult and exhaustive process of getting approvals and then building have been the catalyst for the very impressive sales data in the Estate market. Another reason is that Santa Barbara offers a wonderful quality of life that is difficult to find anywhere else in the world. Santa Barbara is a small, beautiful and clean oceanfront resort community that enjoys great weather all year long.

In response to the need to serve clientele in this high end boom, Distinctive Real Estate was born. Distinctive Real Estate is the only luxury boutique real estate firm in Santa Barbara with a focus on serving the affluent clientele with the very best service and representation. In addition to the traditional buying and selling, Distinctive Real Estate provides individualized concierge service that provides a wide array of services ranging from Estate Management, Vacation Rental and Interior Design, as well as to restaurant reservations, tee times at golf courses, and hard to get spa appointment down to filling the refrigerator with all our clients favorites upon their arrival.

Affluent buyers are finding that Santa Barbara’s fantastic quality of life, coupled with its historically limited inventory and low growth philosophy creates a wonderful living environment and perhaps a darn good investment strategy as well.

Environmental Company, California, Relocates to Better Abate, Remediate, and Eradicate in Bay Area

Environmental Company, California, Relocates to Better Abate, Remediate, and Eradicate in Bay Area

ThermaPureHeat

Santa Clara, CA (PRWEB) July 9, 2008

Bugs, mold, dust, asbestos. The smallest invaders can often create the biggest disasters if they aren't found and eliminated fast. Quick response and resolution are important to businesses and homeowners throughout the Bay Area who are increasingly turning to Alliance Environmental Group environmental services. California residents can now gain more immediate assistance from this contractor, newly relocated in a larger facility.

"We are expanding to meet the needs of our clients," explains company spokesperson Stephanie Palos, who notes that the new location at 3545 Victor Street in Santa Clara is larger and thus able to handle a greater volume of projects and is more centrally located to provide better service to the Bay Area.

Alliance Environmental Group has completed more than 55,000 projects over the past thirteen years, serving high-profile commercial clients, like the Anaheim Hotel near Disneyland where containments were established in 57 units by this environmental company. California residential customers, like the Montecito family who had been suffering from chronic allergies, have also benefited. In this residential situation, the company applied ThermaPureHeat, a non-chemical technology that applies controlled heat to kill toxic organisms such as mold, mildew, dust mites and bacteria that can contribute to allergies.

With these kinds of environmental services, California business owners and residents protect their assets and their health. Services like mildew and black mold removal, asbestos disposal, and a non-toxic approach to get rid of bed bugs has made Alliance Environmental Group a well-used resource in the Bay Area. Emphasis on reliable performance and delivering optimal results has clearly made a difference in company growth.

"Our top priority is to give the service our customers deserve The First Time, On Time, Every Time," says spokesperson Stephanie Palos, who notes that this focus may be why relocation to a larger, more centralized facility has been necessary for this environmental company.

California residents and businesses call on Alliance Environmental Group for other services also, including lead-based paint removal, crime-scene remediation, analysis, and clean up, building demolition, and non-chemical termite eradication.

For a full list of services, helpful information, or to request a free estimate, visit alliance-enviro.com.

About Alliance Environmental Group:

Providing the full spectrum of environmental services, California based Alliance Environmental Group is now located in Santa Clara, where they continue to handle asbestos abatement, air duct cleaning, toxic mold removal, dryer vent cleaning, and bed bug elimination, in addition to demolition and clean-up projects. CEO Joseph McLean and President Jeff McLean, along with the Alliance staff, offer insurance adjustors, contractors, property managers, business owners and homeowners more than 50 years of combined experience in all areas of environmental remediation.
