You have large areas of tinder-dry brush... hundreds of square miles above Santa Barbara. So you have all that fuel, and warm temps. When the winds blow like this, all it takes is a spark. The Santa Ana winds are warm, dry winds that are PERFECT for making fire.
I'm watching this on TV, with dozens and dozens of mansions burning. Most of them are at least 3-5 million. (I'm familiar with the real estate in the area). They could easily lose a billion in real estate before morning.
--------------
OK, it's morning. 100+ homes lost, times an average of 2.5 million per home = 250 million in real estate. Looks like I overshot, guessing that the average was 5 million, and 200 homes would be lost. Hey, it was dark.

You don't know much about California do you? We have fires every year. There's no sign unless you think dry weather and lots of dry brush is a sign...

Q&A: When the brush fires hit southern california every year, is it always the work of arsonists?
Question by Rick C: When the brush fires hit southern california every year, is it always the work of arsonists?
I mean every year it happens! I was born and raised there, and remember riding my bike up into the Santa Monica mountains when i was a kid, to see the firefighters and the smoke and flames. Just last night, a new wildfire hit the Santa Barbara area, in the town of Montecito, destroying at least 70 homes. Those Santa Ana winds are notorious for help fan the flames, but isn't it really the work of arsonist(s) in this case, usually? What's everyone think?

It sucks. Fires are fires no matter what city. There are fires all over southern California right now. I don't care any more about Montecito. It's sucks equally for everyone and I just thank God that I have not been personally affected.
