Supposedly in 1876, a visiting seaman gave a seedling of this tree to a girl in Santa Barbara. A year later, he friend replanted it in it's current location - the corner of Chapala and Montecito.
It is now one of the largest of its species (Ficus macrophyllia) in the United States. It is a historic landmark and is on the California Register of Big Trees. It averages 80' in height, 176' in average crown spread and over 40' in diameter.
It is an awesome sight!
